Patmos is a magical, picturesque and peaceful island with very clean air to breath.
It tends to lose its greenness in the later part of the summer, but this does not detract from the beauty of its lacy shoreline, lovely bays and little islands nearby.
The roughly 3000 inhabitants live mostly in the village of Skala, in the hill village of Hora and in Grikos in the South and Kambos in the North of the island.
Not on one of the main tourist routes, Patmos is the ideal place for those who are looking for somewhere different.
Its long and distinguished history and its natural beauty unspoilt by modern touristic development make it an unparalleled place to which many visitors return again year after year.

Hora

Here, imposing old mansions cluster round the famous Monastery of Saint John.
This complex of stark white buildings climbing up the hill, which is crowned by the battlements and bell-tower of the fortress-monastery (begun in 1088), is the very heart of Patmos.
The dazzling sight of it catches the visitor’s eye wherever she/he may be on the island.
The village of Hora is a small community with many attractive little restaurants and coffee-houses, beautiful little souvenir shops, and small provision shops.
It connects with the rest of the island by bus or taxi, and there is an old foot path leading down the mountain that gets to Skala in about 20 minutes.

Skala

Skala may be described as the capital of Patmos.
It has the largest number of buildings and a pleasant port area, as well as a great variety of eating places, coffee-houses, and every kind of shop.
A large selection of bars, clubs and open-air cafes caters to the island’s night life.
Hotels and rooms for rent are mostly in the quieter part of Skala or along the main roads.
Communication between Skala and the rest of the island is by bus or taxi, or by daily excursion boats to quiet beaches along the coast and to a number of neighboring islets.

Grikos

This idyllic fishing village lies about 5 km south of Skala.
It is built along the shore of the picturesque Gulf of Grikou, with its mysterious red Kaliltsoni rock, where hermits used to live for centuries.
The old seafront, which offers a romantic view of brightly painted fishing boats, has little tavernas that offer the tasty dishes of the island at every hour of the day.
Quiet beaches with plenty of shade trees (mostly tamarisks), and its places with beach-beds and umbrellas, are ideal for holiday relaxation.
There is also the possibility of water sports for those who want it.
Grikos connects by bus or taxi with the rest of the island, and old footpaths lead to Hora or to Skala.

Kambos

This is a farming community about 8 km north of Skala (Kambos meaning field).
The village square opposite the big church of the Annunciation has several good tavernas providing meals, and a mini-market for essentials.
The long, sandy, shallow beach has shady trees, as well as beach beds, umbrellas, and various types of water sport for all ages.
There are also three different beach restaurants.
The regular bus or taxis assure transport to the other parts of the island.

Seaside

The beaches on the photos are located 100 meter from the Holiday Homes Irini.
They are easy to reach and ideal for a bath in the early morning or a quiet time to rest during a hot summer day.
