Patmos is a
magical, picturesque and peaceful island with very
clean air to breath. It tends to lose its
greenness in the later part of the summer, but
this does not detract from the beauty of its lacy
shoreline, lovely bays and little islands
nearby. The roughly 3000 inhabitants live
mostly in the village of Skala, in the hill
village of Hora and in Grikos in the South and
Kambos in the North of the island. Not on one
of the main tourist routes, Patmos is the ideal
place for those who are looking for somewhere
different. Its long and distinguished history
and its natural beauty unspoilt by modern
touristic development make it an unparalleled
place to which many visitors return again year
after year.
Hora
Here, imposing old mansions cluster round
the famous Monastery of Saint John. This
complex of stark white buildings climbing up the
hill, which is crowned by the battlements and
bell-tower of the fortress-monastery (begun in
1088), is the very heart of Patmos. The
dazzling sight of it catches the visitor’s eye
wherever she/he may be on the island. The
village of Hora is a small community with many
attractive little restaurants and coffee-houses,
beautiful little souvenir shops, and small
provision shops. It connects with the rest of
the island by bus or taxi, and there is an old
foot path leading down the mountain that gets to
Skala in about 20 minutes.
